Refugee mother and daughter reunited after 11 years apart

When Negisti left her daughter and fled Eritrea to seek ayslum in Europe, her first priority became to one day be resettled with her daughter again in the U.S. In November 2012, after 11 years apart, her dream finally came true when she and her daughter were reunited in Tucson, Arizona.

“I was working in a government job when one day they announced that all employees had to join the army,” recalls 40-year-old Negisti Kurban of Eritrea, a country in the Horn of Africa. “They said it would only be two months, but we had heard stories of other people who were never allowed to leave.”
