July 20, 2013 marked the two-year anniversary of the United Nations declaration of famine in Somalia.
Scarce rain in 2011 led to crop failure, loss of livestock and soaring food prices. Malnutrition rates in southern Somalia -- where ongoing armed conflict made it nearly impossible for aid to reach people in need -- reached their highest levels in nearly two decades.
Some 1.5 million were forced to leave their homes in search of food and safety.
