In Congo, finding promise in a therapy that brings women together to heal

Women in the Democratic Republic of Congo who are survivors of sexual violence often live with feelings of fear, depression and isolation. Research director Jeannie Annan describes the positive results the IRC found after introducing a different form of therapy that brings these women together to heal.
For over ten years, the International Rescue Committee has provided holistic support to survivors of sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo, delivering health care, legal assistance and emotional support. Recently, the IRC collaborated with Johns Hopkins and the University of Washington to introduce and evaluate another form of therapy for women in need of additional, specialized support, called Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT).
