Helen Dekorne, an AmeriCorps Vista volunteer with the IRC in Baltimore, reflects on her year matching refugees who fled war and persecution with local volunteers who are helping them adjust to new lives in the United States.
"We sit together on the floor and eat injera, the spongy Ethiopian bread. Introductions have been made and everybody is quiet, digesting the new information. At any minute though, the questions will bubble forth. Both the mentor and the family will want to know when, why, how.
