The IRC introduced Nawida Saidhosin to the League of Kitchens, a New York-based workshop provides classes for small groups of students in the homes of immigrant cooks. Nawida was one of the six chosen to share her delicious recipes of Afghan cuisine.

“Don’t worry, just try.” Nawida Saidhosin recalls these simple, comforting words repeated to her by her caseworker from the International Rescue Committee. She also remembers fighting back tears as she struggled to speak even a word of English, feeling alone and hopeless in New York City, where she and her son, Bahram, were resettled four years ago.
Without a support system, steady income or English skills, Nawida was uncertain of her future, but determined to create a new life for herself and Bahram.
