Early on a Saturday night at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, 14 refugee students from around the globe stood on the fabled stage before the vast auditorium, marveling at the gleaming crystal chandeliers dangling from the ceiling, the stagehands moving giant props for the evening’s performance, and—most of all—the critically acclaimed lyric soprano standing among them.
“Could you imagine singing from this spot on the stage,” asked Danielle de Niese, who when not performing before adoring audiences is an IRC supporter keen on introducing young people to the opera world.
