Married couple Shamini and Sathiya, refugees from Sri Lanka, say they almost never celebrate Valentine’s Day. Not out of indifference to the holiday, but out of habit.
“In Sri Lanka, we always had to keep our relationship a secret, so of course we never celebrated Valentine’s Day,” Shamini says. “For us, it was either a few days early or late. That way, no one would ever suspect us of loving each other.”
